The Legendary Williams, 45, Awarded Wild Card for Her Initial Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."
